Abstract

When high signal intensity is observed on precontrast T1-weighted MR images of the labyrinth, possible explanations include fat, slow flow, high protein content and prior hemorrhage. Weissman et al. (1992) suggested that the possibility of such high signals were caused by labyrinthine hemorrhage. We assessed all available patients with high signals in the labyrinth on precontrast T1-weighted MR images who developed sudden hearing loss and vertigo. Three patients were found to have severe and irreversible impairment of both cochlear and vestibular function by inner ear hemorrhage. We present the clinical and radiologic findings along with review of the literature.
